| In
2005, 1,451 children ages 14 years and younger died as
occupants in motor vehicle crashes, and approximately 203,000 were injured.
That’s an average of 4 deaths and 556 injuries each day (Source: NHTSA
2006b).

| A tremendous amount of force
is exerted on the human body in a vehicle collision. A car moving at 40
miles per hour strikes a wall with the same force as a car hitting the ground
after driving off a 50-foot cliff. Parents need to realize that even
low-speed crashes can seriously injure or kill children. [American
Academy of Family Physicians, 2002]

| Car seats expire?
|
| The Federal government
requires the expiration date
to be stamped into the frame of every car seat (not just a sticker, but actually
have the date molded into the plastic).
Check the date on your seat,
and if you have difficulty locating the date, contact a Certified Child
Passenger Safety Technician. If your seat is expired, replace the seat
immediately and learn how to properly install your new car seat. You do
not want to endanger the life of your child.
|
| |
| When a car seat expires,
it should be dismantled before being disposed of so that no other child will be
endangered by use of the expired car seat. Concerned Angels, Health
Departments, and other organizations sponsor periodic "Crushing events" to
permanently dispose of expired, recalled, and unsafe car seats. Here are
some photos of the Virginia State Fair "First Annual Monster Truck Drive to Save
Lives" in Richmond, Virginia. Wally drove the War Wizard Monster Truck,
owned by Randy Moore, to destroy the pile of expired and recalled seats.
Henrico Fire Department, Virginia Department of Health, New Kent County
Sheriff's Office, and Concerned Angels extend our gratitude to Randy Moore, Wally,
and the Virginia State Fair for their dedication to child passenger safety. |
