FACT: Motor vehicle crashes remain the leading cause of death for children in the United States. In 2005, 1,451 children ages 14 years and younger died as occupants in motor vehicle crashes, and approximately 203,000 were injured. That’s an average of 4 deaths and 556 injuries each day (Source: NHTSA 2006b).

This problem has existed for decades. It is time for a solution.

S.O.S.

Students Onto Safety: Concerned Angels is launching the S.O.S. call for help in passing a uniform, comprehensive code of standards for Child Passenger Safety across all states in this nation. We have designed innovative legislation to mitigate the child passenger safety problem. Beginning with the State of Ohio, Concerned Angels is proposing the passage of the "Safe Child Act." Students Onto Safety teams will lead Reach 2 Save Lives programs in schools and learn how to effectively get needed safety laws passed. Students will know how the legislative system works while building safer communities. They will learn about leadership while making a life-saving difference.

Concerned Angels is working to teach people how to prevent death and injuries to children due to car seat misuse. We have worked with sponsors such as Chick-fil-A, The Randolph and Susan Reynolds Foundation, Ukrop's Supermarkets, and Simply Storage, in efforts to carry out our mission.

Now available is the Child Passenger Safety Instructional DVD entitled "Mommy, Am I Safe". The DVD contains video footage by Certified Child Passenger Safety Technicians teaching about proper car seat installation. Concerned Angels, in coordination with local fire departments, sheriff's offices, police departments, health departments, and sponsors, is effectively educating our nation on the proper use of child car seats and motivating parents, grandparents, and caregivers to have their children’s car seats inspected by a Certified Child Passenger Safety Technician for free. On June 15, 2000, my 13-month old twins and I were in a nightmarish head-on-collision. Another driver who was trying to evade capture by police by purposely going the wrong way on the interstate intentionally crashed into our car. There was no time for me to take evasive action.

What happened to us could have happened to anyone. Since the accident, the doctors prognosis for my recovery has run the spectrum from “not expected to make it’ to “having to learn to walk again” to “regaining my life as a mother, wife, and college professor.” After twelve surgeries, many months of daily physical therapy, many answers to prayers, and much time spent thinking about all the lessons I have learned during my recovery, I now have the opportunity to use our story to encourage others to protect their “little angels” from the leading cause of death and disabling injuries to children in our nation: car crashes.
